A few weeks after their May 2015 wedding in St. Peter, Chelsea & Brandon Zabel whisked away to the beautiful islands of Maui and Kauai, Hawaii. We caught up with them after to hear about their honeymoon and get tips to share with other couples looking for an exotic locale to spend their first few days as Mr. & Mrs.
SMW: Where did you stay?
SMW: How would you rate your hotels?
C&B: We’d give the Aston Kaanapali Shores an 8. We loved having a kitchen in our room, and the staff was great! We also were close to the pool and beach. However, the room was a little old and got a little noisy at night.
The Sheraton would get a 7. We had a very nice room and again, great staff! We were a little far from all the amenities because they had several buildings, so we had to cross the street to get to anything. Parking was also very limited.
SMW: Let’s talk dollars + cents! About how much was the cost of your airfare + lodging?
C&B: We paid about $6,500 total, including food and excursions. It was $5,000 for airfare and lodging.
SMW: Any tips for saving money on food and activities?
C&B: If you do your research, you can find restaurants with great food that won’t break the bank! We found a place with a prime rib dinner for $16 each and it was by far the best meal we had the whole trip. As far as excursions – you definitely get what you pay for. We chose to pay a little more for a better experience. We went on a sunset dinner cruise on the Pride of Maui, A Luau at the Royal Lahaina Luau, snorkeling and tubing through old sugar cane canals.
SMW: Who helped you arrange your trip?
C&B: We worked with Hometown Travel located in St. Peter. They were great to work with and helped us plan a great trip!
SMW: What would you absolutely recommend of something you did on your honeymoon?
C&B: We loved snorkeling. We went through a smaller charter boat and were able to go to more places and look for dolphins. We also loved trying all the local restaurants!
SMW: Any tips for other honeymooners?
C&B: We loved having a kitchenette in our room. We always went out for dinner but it was nice to make our own breakfast and snacks. Also, do your research on local restaurants and always ask the hotel staff for their favorites. We saved a lot of money by staying away from the popular tourist restaurants.
SMW: What about transportation – what’s the best way to get around?
C&B: Although it was more expensive, having a car was great! We could do things exactly when we wanted to. If you can spring for it – a convertible would be very fun on the islands!
SMW: What was your favorite part of the entire honeymoon?
C&B: Relaxing at the beach and pool – it was welcomed after planning a wedding!
